Koreans seldom address one another by their first names. Generally the Western terms
Mr. and Mrs. have replaced earlier formal addresses, but Koreans haven't entirely adopted our
more casual name-calling.
Although this tradition has been somewhat relaxed in recent years, it's still considered rude to use
another's given name unless one is certain that he or she wants to be addressed that way. This is
particularly true when the person is (by Korean tradition) of higher status than you are, because
of age or social or professional standing.
Married women don't assume their husbands' family names. Hence Margaret's initial confusion
over names, and her reference to her co-worker and supervisor as Mrs. Lee and Mrs. Kim.
